Leg Pain & Venous Insufficiency

Relief from chronic leg aching, heaviness and swelling with simple, office-based procedures — without open surgery or stripping.

Why Do My Legs Ache?

Millions of Americans wonder why their legs ache and feel heavy at the end of the day, or after hours of sitting or standing. Others experience a “restless” feeling in the lower legs. Many blame their shoes or hard floors — but the real cause is often abnormal, backwards flow (called “reflux”) in the veins beneath the skin.

The typical patient may have no visible vein abnormalities at all. But a functional vein ultrasound — performed by a Registered Vascular Technologist — can accurately identify reflux and backwards flow in diseased saphenous veins.

Backwards flow in the saphenous vein acts like a trap door, causing abnormally high vein pressures and poor circulation out of the leg. The result: aching, heaviness, swelling, and sometimes restless legs — even when the surface looks normal.

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is the gold-standard, minimally invasive treatment for venous reflux. Using a thin RF catheter inserted through a small needle entry point, the abnormal saphenous vein is precisely heated and sealed closed. No vein stripping, no open incisions, no general anesthesia.

This office-based procedure uses simple local anesthesia — no IV sedation, no opioid pain medication. Patients are encouraged to walk immediately afterward and return to normal activities within 2–3 days.

People often ask: “Don’t I need that vein?” The answer is no. When an abnormal saphenous vein flows backwards, it forces the normal deep veins to work much harder. Once the refluxing vein is sealed with RFA, the normal veins can work more efficiently, restoring healthy circulation — dramatically relieving symptoms.

  • Office-based under local anesthesia; no hospital required
  • Ultrasound-guided RF catheter treatment — precise and safe
  • Walk immediately; return to normal activity within a few days
  • No sutures; entry point covered with a small bandage
  • Results are effective and durable

Varithena (polidocanol injectable foam)

An FDA-approved, proprietary foam sclerosant ideal for treating larger incompetent veins and truncal varicosities. Varithena is delivered under ultrasound guidance and provides excellent coverage of the treated vein segment.
