Sclerotherapy
Precision injection therapy to seal closed spider veins and small varicose veins — safely, effectively, and comfortably.
What Is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a time-tested, highly effective technique for treating spider veins and small-to-medium varicose veins. A specialized sclerosant solution is injected directly into the targeted vein using some of the smallest needles available, causing the vein to close and gradually fade from view.
At Asheville Vein Center, we use modern sclerosant agents — not the outdated saline injections that caused burning and skin damage. Our agents are gentler, more effective, and produce superior cosmetic outcomes.
When larger or deeper abnormal veins are contributing to spider veins, Dr. Fontenot or Dr. Bock may use ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy to treat those feeder veins beneath the surface. Addressing the root cause produces longer-lasting results and reduces the chance of recurrence.
Sclerosant Agents We Use
Varithena (polidocanol injectable foam) — An FDA-approved, proprietary foam sclerosant ideal for treating larger incompetent veins and truncal varicosities. Varithena is delivered under ultrasound guidance and provides excellent coverage of the treated vein segment.
Compounded foam sclerotherapy — Compounded polidocanol foam is prepared on-site for precise, customized treatment of spider veins, reticular veins, and smaller varicosities. Foam sclerosants displace blood within the vein, maximizing contact with the vessel wall and improving efficacy.
Liquid sclerotherapy — For fine spider veins and telangiectasias, liquid sclerosant delivered through ultra-fine needles offers precise, comfortable treatment with minimal discomfort and excellent cosmetic results.
